Arena development

Arenamringar

ÖSTERSUND BIATHLON ARENA has been developed over several decades and is Sweden’s official National Arena. A major boost
was the 2008 Biathlon World Championships, when the arena was expanded with stands for 15,000 people and a new secretariat building.
Subsequently, work has continued and the arena’s functionality is now being significantly extended with improved areas for the media with
fantastic views of the stadium and subterranean links to the infield.

IMPROVEMENTS ALSO BEING CARRIED OUT UNTIL 2014:
1 A new area for waxing cabins with excellent parking and a ski test area.
2 A new spectator area next to the main stands.
3 A new area for technology and TV buses next to the Media Centre.
4 Östersund’s new ice rink opened in December 2013 and will be
used for accreditation and the World Championships banquet.

In recent years, the City of Östersund and Region Jämtland-Härjedalen have invested €5 million on stands, waxing cabins, a media centre
and media compound. This has resulted in an arena with better functionality through accessibility and smoother flows. Ahead of the 2008 World Championships, the arena was equipped with lighting that allows television broadcasts of evening races, i.e. at prime time.
